A shed hinge that binds is usually the pin
I opened the shed on a raw March morning and the door scraped the threshold. I lifted the handle and shoved. The leaf moved in a jerk and then stuck half open. I thought the timber had swollen. The bottom hinge was orange at the knuckle. The pin would not turn in my fingers. Two screws in the frame leaf had walked, and the door had dropped onto the sill.
A hinge is two leaves and a pin. The leaves screw to the door and the frame. The pin is the pivot they turn on. If the pin rusts in the knuckle, the hinge binds. You force the door. The screws tear. The leaf drops. Then the door drags, and every trip to the hook is a fight. People plane the bottom of the door. The wood was not the job. The pin had locked.
When I check a hinge I start at the knuckle, not at the paint. I look for rust bloom, a pin that has ridden up, or a knuckle that does not close in a clean line. I lift the door an inch. If the scrape goes away, the hinges have let it down. Then I look at the screws. A screw that turns without biting is a hole already blown. New screws in the same soft timber will walk in a month. I want them in a frame or a batten, not in the skin of the shed. Thin board holds a trowel hook. It will not hold a door you lean on with a wet hand.

Wire-brush the knuckle first, or work a little penetrant in and wait. Then a film, not a bath. I would not grind a pin that is already thin. If the knuckle is oval and the pin rattles, that hinge is finished.
A padbolt that will not throw is usually the keep is what you notice next. A dropped door puts the bar under the hole. I check the pin before I move the keep. If the door hangs true, the bolt often throws again. If I pack the keep first, I am fitting a latch to a door that is still falling.

That is how a pin that was fine in October is seized by March. I wipe the hinges when I wipe the tools. A shed hook that actually holds a fork is only useful if I can open the door to reach it.
Skip cheap ungalvanised butts on an outdoor leaf. They rust from the pin out. Skip two small hinges on a door you have to lean on. A heavy shed door wants three, or two proper tee hinges with a strap long enough to spread the load. Skip longer screws into the same blown holes. Move the hinge a little, or put a plate behind the leaf so the screws bite. Skip planing the door because it drags on a wet Monday. Wait for a dry day, hang it true, then decide if the wood actually fouls. Skip forcing a bound door until the top hinge rips. I have that scar in the frame.
This shows in late winter and early spring, after months of wet, when you first use the shed every weekend again. It shows in autumn if you never oiled the pin and a gale slams a stiff door. I now work the door on a wet Sunday in November. If it scrapes, I look at the knuckle. If the pin is dry and orange, I clean it before the frost. March is too late to pretend it is swelling.
I do not need a new door because the old one binds. I need a pin that turns, screws that bite, and a leaf that hangs where I set it.
